Atera no Nanataki Waterfalls

Japanese: 阿寺ノ七滝 - あてらのななたき

This waterfall is located in Hourai-cho, Shitaraga-gun, Aichi Prefecture, about 7km east of Mikawa-Ono Station on the JR Iida Line. It is on the eastern side of the Median Tectonic Line, where the Atera River creates a group of waterfalls on a fault cliff made of gravel. There are seven waterfalls over a drop of about 70m, hence the name Nanataki (Seven Waterfalls). It is part of the Tokai Nature Trail, and has been designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, attracting many tourists. The gravel near the waterfall is also known as "Kodaki-ishi" (Child-holding Stone), and it is believed that if you bring it home and worship it, you will be blessed with a child. [Iseki Kotaro]

愛知県南設楽（したら）郡鳳来町，JR飯田線三河大野駅の東方約7kmにある滝。中央構造線の東辺にあたり，阿寺川がレキ岩よりなる断層崖に瀑布群をつくり，落差約70mの間に滝が7段あることから七滝の名がある。東海自然歩道の一部をなし，名勝･天然記念物に指定され，観光客が多い。滝付近のレキ岩は一名〈子抱石〉と称し，持ち帰ってまつると子どもを授かるという信仰がある。【井関弘太郎】
