A small French island located south of Newfoundland in North America. It has an area of 26 km2. The French landed on it in the early 17th century, and it later fought over its ownership with the British. In 1814, it became French territory along with the nearby island of Miquelon in the Treaty of Paris. Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon is one of the French regional public entities (population 6,392 in 1990), and its capital is Saint-Pierre, which is also the largest city.
