French clergyman and author. Elected member of the Academie de France in 1695. In 1712, he accompanied Cardinal Polignac to the Utrecht Congress to end the War of the Spanish Succession, and this prompted him to write and publish Perpetual Peace in Europe (1713-17), a three-volume work in which he argued for the establishment of a "supreme court of nations" and intended to use the authority of this court to rid mankind of the evils of war. This book had a great influence on later pacifists, including Rousseau and Kant.

フランスの聖職者，著作家。1695年にフランス･アカデミー会員に選出される。1712年ポリニャック枢機卿に従って，スペイン継承戦争を終結させるためのユトレヒト会議に出席し，これを契機に《ヨーロッパ恒久平和》全3巻を執筆･刊行した(1713‐17)。彼はこのなかで〈諸国民の最高法廷〉設置の必要を説き，この法廷の権威によって人類から戦争の害悪を除こうと意図した。この書は，ルソー，カントをはじめとする後の平和論者に大きな影響を与えている。
