1658‐1743 French clergyman and author. Elected member of the Academie de France in 1695. In 1712, he accompanied Cardinal Polignac to the Utrecht Congress to end the War of the Spanish Succession, and this prompted him to write and publish Perpetual Peace in Europe (1713-17), a three-volume work in which he argued for the establishment of a "supreme court of nations" and intended to use the authority of this court to rid mankind of the evils of war. This book had a great influence on later pacifists, including Rousseau and Kant. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
