Koga Itsaku - Koga Issaku

Japanese:
Koga Itsaku - Koga Issaku

Electrical communication engineer. Known for his research on quartz crystal oscillators. Born on December 5, 1899 in Tosu, Saga Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University in 1923 (Taisho 12). Became an assistant professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology when it was established in 1929 (Showa 4), and a professor in 1939. At the time, with the rapid development of wireless communication, there was a demand for highly stable oscillators, so he began researching quartz crystal oscillators. In 1932, he published a theory on the thickness vibration of thin plate oscillators, and invented the R-cut quartz crystal oscillator, which has very little frequency variation due to temperature. This made it possible to obtain very stable high-frequency electrical oscillations. This quartz crystal oscillator is widely used in wireless transmitters and is also used in quartz clocks. In 1937, he combined a frequency down converter with a quartz crystal oscillator to create the quartz crystal clock for the Tokyo Astronomical Observatory. He also served as a professor at Tokyo Imperial University in 1944. In 1948 (Showa 23), he was awarded the Academy Prize for his achievements in the basic theory and applications of crystal oscillators, and in 1963 he was awarded the Order of Culture.
