A large square in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, said to accommodate about 100,000 people. It is surrounded by an oval colonnade built by Bernini in 1656-67 at the suggestion of Pope Alexander VII, with the entrance to the square and the great staircase to the front of the Basilica on its short axis, and two fountains on its long axis, and an obelisk in the center. This ancient Egyptian obelisk, which was located next to the old basilica, was moved in the late 16th century by engineer Domenico Fontana, who took 900 craftsmen and 140 horses over a period of four months.

バチカン市国のサン･ピエトロ大聖堂前にあって，約10万人を収容するといわれる大広場。教皇アレクサンデル7世の発案により，1656‐67年にベルニーニが建設した長円形の大歩廊(コロネード)で囲まれ，その短軸上に広場への入口と大聖堂正面への大階段，長軸上に二つの噴水が位置し，中央にオベリスクが立つ。旧聖堂脇にあったこの古代エジプトのオベリスクは，16世紀後半に技師ドメニコ･フォンタナが900人の職人と140頭の馬を使い4ヵ月かかって移設したもの。
