Eiji Amou

Japanese: 天羽英二 - あもうえいじ

1887-1968 A diplomat from the Taisho to Showa eras.
Born August 19, 1887. Joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and served as Ambassador to Italy and Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs before becoming Director General of the Intelligence Bureau in 1943. In 1946, while Director General of the Ministry's Intelligence Department, he issued the Tenpu Statement, which emphasized Japan's sole control of East Asia, provoking backlash from China and Europe and the United States. After the war, he served as Executive Director of the United Nations Association of Japan, among other positions. Died July 31, 1968. Age 80. Born in Tokushima Prefecture. Graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School (now Hitotsubashi University).

明治20年8月19日生まれ。外務省にはいり,イタリア大使,外務次官などをへて昭和18年情報局総裁。外務省情報部長時代の9年,日本の単独東亜管理を強調する天羽声明を発表,中国,欧米の反発をまねいた。戦後は日本国連協会専務理事などをつとめた。昭和43年7月31日死去。80歳。徳島県出身。東京高商(現一橋大)卒。
