Altan Khan

Chief of the Tumed tribe in Inner Mongolia. In Chinese sources, he is written as Altan Khan or Ledao Khan. He was born as the second son of Barsu Bolat, and inherited the Tumed tribe after his death. From the mid-16th century, he often invaded the northern border of the Ming Dynasty, and was feared by the Ming people. He also oppressed his fellow tribe, the Chahar tribe, and drove them outside the Liaodong border. He later made peace with them, received the title of Sito Khan from Dalaisun Goden Khan, and became the most powerful man in Inner Mongolia. In August 1550 (29th year of the Jiajing era), Altan besieged Beijing for three days, seeking official trade with the Ming Dynasty.

内モンゴル，トゥメト部長。中国資料では阿勒坦汗，俺答汗と表記される。バルス･ボラトの次子として生まれ，その死後，トゥメト部を継承した。16世紀半ばより，しばしば明の北辺に侵入し，明人から恐れられた。また同族のチャハル部を圧迫して，これを遼東辺外に追った。のちにこれと和解し，ダライスン･ゴデン･ハンからシト･ハンの称号を得て，内モンゴル最大の実力者となった。1550年(嘉靖29)8月にアルタンは，明との正式な交易を求めて，北京を3日間包囲した。
