Russian composer and pianist. Born into an aristocratic family, he studied piano from an early age. He enrolled at the Moscow Conservatory when it opened in 1866, studying composition under Tchaikovsky and piano under NG Rubinstein. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory as a teacher, and trained many students, including Rachmaninoff and Scriapin, but he also had excellent skills as a pianist and is known as the first performer of Tchaikovsky's works. As a composer, he studied Western classical techniques deeply, while also interacting with composers of the Russian national school, and wrote works such as "Ioann Damaskin" (cantata, 1884) and "Orestia" (opera, 1894), as well as symphonies and chamber music.

ロシアの作曲家，ピアニスト。貴族の家に生まれ幼時からピアノを学んだ。モスクワ音楽院開設（1866年）と同時に入学，作曲をチャイコフスキー，ピアノをN.G.ルビンシテインに師事した。教師としてモスクワ音楽院で教え，ラフマニノフ，スクリャーピンなど多くの弟子を育てたが，ピアニストとしてもすぐれた技量をもち，チャイコフスキーの初演者として知られる。作曲家としては，西欧の古典的技法に深く学びながら，ロシア国民楽派の作曲家とも交流，《ヨアン・ダマスキン》（カンタータ，1884年），《オレスティア》（オペラ，1894年）のほか，交響曲，室内楽の作品がある。
