Alamo - Alamo (English spelling)
During the Texas War of Independence, a small group of Texans barricaded themselves in a monastery in San Antonio (now in southern Texas, USA). They fought against a Mexican army of about 3,000 men led by Santa Anna, who surrounded the monastery, from February 23 to March 6, 1836, and 187 men were killed, including commander William B. Travis, Davy Crockett, and James Bowie. About 30 non-combatants were spared by the Mexican army. "Remember the Alamo!" became the watchword of the Texan army.
