Hiroyuki Kuze

He was a senior councilor in the early Edo period and the lord of Sekijuku Domain in Shimousa Province (Sekijuku Town, Chiba Prefecture). He was the third son of Kuze Hironobu and was born in Musashi Province. He was commonly known as Sannojo and was Yamatonokami. He served Tokugawa Hidetada and was later added to Iemitsu's page group. After working as a shoinban and kontor (small storeroom attendant), he became the head clerk of the page group in 1638. During this time, his stipend was often increased, and in 1646 he became a daimyo with a fief of 10,000 koku. In 1653, he was ordered to assist the young 4th Shogun Ietsuna along with Makino Chikanari, Tsuchiya Kazunao, and Naito Tadakiyo. From then on, he was involved in government affairs at the heart of the shogunate government, and after serving as a young councilor, he was promoted to senior councilor in 1663. In 1679, he was given a fief of 50,000 koku in Sekijuku, Shimousa. In 1669, he rebuilt Noken-do Hall in a scenic spot known for the Eight Views of Kanazawa.

江戸前期の老中,下総国関宿藩(千葉県関宿町)藩主。久世広宣の3男で,武蔵国の生まれ。通称三之丞。大和守。徳川秀忠につかえ,のち家光の小姓組に加えられる。書院番,小納戸などを経て,寛永15(1638)年小姓組番頭となる。この間しばしば加増され,正保3(1646)年1万石の大名となる。承応2(1653)年,牧野親成,土屋数直,内藤忠清らと共に幼少の4代将軍家綱の補佐を命じられる。以後,幕政の中枢にあって政務に携わり,若年寄を経て寛文3(1663)年老中に昇進。9年には下総関宿5万石を領した。なお寛文2年,金沢八景で知られる景勝地に能見堂を再建した。
