Kokonchomonju - Kokonchomonju

Japanese:
Kokonchomonju - Kokonchomonju

A collection of tales from the Kamakura period. 20 volumes. Compiled by Tachibana no Narisue. Completed in 1254 (Kencho 6). Approximately 700 short stories are divided into 30 sections. The volumes cover a wide range of topics, including gods, Buddhism, politics and loyal subjects, public affairs, literature, waka poetry, music, dance and music, calligraphy, the arts, filial piety and love, lust, valor, archery, horsemanship, sumo wrestling, paintings, kemari, gambling, theft, weddings, sorrow, sightseeing, lodgings, fights, amusing words and cleverness, strange things, transformations, food and drink, plants, fish, insects, birds and beasts, and the tales included are also very diverse. As the preface clearly states, this is a successor to the Insei period collections of aristocratic tales, "Uji Dainagon Monogatari" (lost) and "Godansho," and the majority of the topics are about Middle Ages aristocratic society and events surrounding it, with words of praise and admiration for the imperial aristocratic society and its culture spurred throughout, with an overall tone based on ancient thought. On the other hand, in the collection of humorous stories, such as "Kyougen Ukoutokohen," there is a noticeable inclination toward the extremely vulgar and obscene world of "street talk," portraying a new medieval image of man that stepped outside the bounds of imperial culture.
