A city in the Selenge Aimak in north-central Mongolia. Altan-Bulak means "Golden Fountain". It faces the Russian city of Kyakhta across the border. It was built alongside Kyakhta on the Russian side as a trading post between the Qing and Russia under the Treaty of Kyakhta in 1727, and was called Maimaichen (the city of buying and selling). In 1921, the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Army occupied Maimaichen, marking the beginning of independence from the Republic of China, and it was later renamed Altan-Bulak in commemoration of this.
