After Eude's death in 898, royal power returned to the Carolingians, but in 922, Margrave Robert I, who had led a rebellion against Charles III the Simple, was elected king, but he died after only one year and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Raoul, Duke of Burgundy (reigned 923-936). After Raoul's death in 936, the balance of power among the powerful nobles led to the Carolingian king Louis IV being chosen as king, but Robert I's son Hugues le Grand skillfully took advantage of this situation, becoming Duke of France in 943 and laying the groundwork for the election of his son Hugh Capet as king. …
