...The origin of the whale's name is unknown, but Fuji probably refers to its purple body color when alive. After death, it turns uniformly black, so in some regions it is called Karasu, Kuronbo, or Kurotsunoko. There are eight species of the genus Lanner shark in the waters off Japan, but Fuji whale has the widest distribution, having been reported from all over Japan south of the Tohoku region, Taiwan, New Zealand, South Africa, Southwest Africa, and off the coast of Uruguay.
