Santaro's Diary - Santaro's Diary

Japanese:
Santaro's Diary - Santaro's Diary

A collection of essays and critiques written by philosopher Abe Jiro. Published in 1914 (Taisho 3). Later, a sequel was published together with this collection as "Omnibus Santaro's Diary" (1918).

This is a collection of short pieces of criticism and impressions about the self and ideals that the author wrote for magazines and newspapers from around the time of his graduation from Tokyo Imperial University (1911). Without the slightest embellishment or pretense, the foolish Santaro examines his own actions, emotions, and thoughts in light of his ideals. Its sincere attitude and sharp speculation gave it an unprecedented appeal, and it took the world by storm, becoming a must-read book for educated young people for almost 30 years (until World War II). The author's view of humanity includes behavioral and artistic chaos, which is analyzed and processed using the orderly logic of Western logic, resulting in a frank self-confession that comes across as manly in a solid European context.

Herein lies the source of the author's later "personalism," which places ultimate value on what emanates from within oneself, but it is also noteworthy that here we see the completion and establishment of the European context that constitutes the mainstream of modern Japanese writing style.
