Japanese: 三太郎越 - さんたろうごえ

A collective term for Akamatsu Taro Pass, Sashiki Taro Pass, and Tsunagi Taro Pass on the Kagoshima Kaido between Hinagu, Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and Minamata City. Known as a difficult spot on the western edge of the Kyushu Mountains, facing the Yatsushiro Sea, it was a route on the Satsuma Domain's alternate attendance route during the feudal era, and Saigo's army also had difficulty crossing these passes during the Seinan War. In 1965, a new national highway (National Highway Route 3) was opened that bypassed these passes, greatly improving transportation between Yatsushiro and Minamata. [Iwamoto Masanori]

熊本県八代市日奈久と水俣市との間にある鹿児島街道の赤松太郎峠，佐敷太郎（さしきたろう）峠，津奈木太郎峠の総称。九州山地西端，八代海に臨む難所として知られ，藩政時代薩摩藩の参勤交代路で，西南戦争の西郷軍もこの峠越えに難渋した。1965年これらの峠を迂回する新国道(国道3号線)が開通し，八代～水俣間の交通の便は大幅に改善された。【岩本政教】
