Zaandam (English spelling)

Japanese: ザーンダム（英語表記）Zaandam

This was an old industrial area in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is now part of the city of Zaanstad. In the 17th century, hundreds of windmills lined the streets, and using these as a power source, various industries such as shipbuilding, lumbering, papermaking, and oil extraction flourished. As it was adjacent to Amsterdam, it had the feel of an industrial area of Amsterdam. The shipbuilding industry in particular was famous, and even Peter the Great of Russia visited to inspect it in 1697. Many green windmills remain today, and there is also a windmill museum.

オランダ，北ホラント州の昔の工業地帯。現在はザーンスタットZaanstad市の一部をなす。17世紀には数百基の風車がたち並び，これを動力源にして造船，製材，製紙，搾油などの諸工業が大いに栄えた。アムステルダムに隣接していたので，さながらアムステルダムの工業地帯の観があった。とくに造船業は有名で，ロシアのピョートル大帝が1697年に視察に訪れたほどである。現在でも緑色の風車が多数残っており，風車博物館もある。
