Located in the southern suburbs of New Delhi, this is the oldest surviving Islamic building in India. It was founded in 1192-98 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak, who conquered northern India at the end of the 12th century, and has since been expanded twice in the last century, and is now in a state of considerable ruin. Qutb-Minār, standing to the southeast of the original structure, is the largest and oldest minaret (spire) in India, also built by Qutb-ud-din, with a diameter of 14.3m at the base and a height of 72.5m. It has a spiral staircase inside and a five-storey exterior with a balcony on each floor. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
