A city located in the delta of the Edogawa River in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It borders Edogawa Ward, Tokyo across the Edogawa River. It was incorporated as a city in 1981. The central city area has been a river port since the Middle Ages. It was a seaweed and shellfish farming area, but fishing rights were abandoned in 1971 due to the sea reclamation that began in the 1960s, the development of the Keiyo Industrial Area, and the construction of Keiyo Port. The area was turned into an industrial and residential area by reclamation, and the population increased rapidly with the opening of the Tozai Subway Line (1969) and the JR Keiyo Line (1988). Tokyo Disneyland, which opened in 1983, is located on the reclaimed land on the south bank, and Tokyo DisneySea, which opened in September 2001, is located in the vicinity, and many large hotels and event halls have been built, making it a resort area near the city. The monorail Disney Resort Line also runs between these two areas. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 17.30 km 2 . 164,877 people (2010).
