As a result, coral reefs are broadly classified into apron reefs, fringing reefs, barrier reefs, atolls, table reefs, and patch reefs (Figure 1). The topographical elements that serve as classification criteria for each type are the presence or absence of a lagoon and its depth, the degree of continuity of the reef flat, the depth of the base of the reef slope on the ocean side, the relative position of the width of the reef to the width of the continental shelf, and the presence or absence of a central island. *Some of the terminology that refers to "patch reef" is listed below.
