A typical port city on the northwestern shore of Lake Superior in western Ontario, Canada. Population 113,746 (1991). Established in 1970 by merging the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur. With the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1885), which linked the city to the grain belt in the west, it became an important port for shipping wheat and other agricultural products through the Great Lakes.
