A mineral whose main component is phosphorus (P). Phosphorus is an element found in relatively large quantities in the earth's crust. It forms phosphate minerals, but apatite (Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (F,Cl,OH)) is the most common accessory mineral in igneous rocks, and it has been calculated that more than 90% of the phosphorus in the earth's crust exists as apatite. It also occurs as minerals such as amblygonite (LiAl(F,OH)(PO 4 ) (lithium resource), monazite (CePO 4 ) , and xenotime (YPO 4 ) . Organic sedimentary deposits, guano deposits, and carbonatite deposits are also major sources of phosphate rock. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
