He disliked government affairs and lived a life of leisure, but after the death of Leo VI, his nephew Constantine (aged 6) took the throne in his place. He refused to pay tribute to Bulgaria to King Simeon in accordance with the peace treaty of 896, which sparked war, and he was killed in battle, bringing the empire into crisis.
