A general term for birds in the Strigidae family of owls, or one of these. Among birds in the Strigidae family, species without ear-like feathers are generally called owls, and species with ear-like feathers are generally called horned owls, but the distinction between owls and horned owls is purely for convenience. These ear-like feathers are simply decorative feathers, and even among closely related species, some have well-developed feathers and some do not. The Strigidae family consists of about 22 genera and 123 species, and is distributed all over the world except Antarctica, living in a variety of environments such as steppes, wetlands, forests, rocky mountains, and tundra.
