The capital of South Darfur Governorate in the western part of the Republic of Sudan. Population 229,000 (1993). A railway was laid in 1960, and the town is the terminus of a 2,117 km long line that runs from Port Sudan to Kassala. Livestock farming and agriculture are practiced in the surrounding area, and half of Sudan's meat is produced there. Camel and vegetable markets are held in the town, but they are small in scale. In 1976, a road to Zalingey, near the Chad border, was constructed with a yen loan from Japan. Jabal Marra (3,071 m), known for its beautiful greenery, is located about 60 km to the north.
