Tatami paper - Tatogami

Japanese:
Tatami paper - Tatogami

Paper that was folded and carried in a pocket, used to write poems and such, or used as tissue for noses. Also called "tatangami," it appears in many literary works from the Heian to Edo periods. At first, it was a hobby of the educated, and the nobles favored danshi (Mutsu paper), but in samurai society, sugiharashi paper became popular, and the type of paper used and the folding method changed over time. It is also included in the Nippon-Portuguese Dictionary (1603). In modern times, it can also refer to folded thick paper coated with lacquer or tannins to hold combs and other items.
