Miyakoji Bungojo - Miyakoji Bungojo

He was a joruri tayu (a chanter) and the founder of the Bungo-bushi style. He was from Kyoto. He was a disciple of Miyakotayu Ichichu of the Itchu-bushi style and was called Miyakokutayu Hanchu, and later became independent and called himself Miyakoji Bungo. In 1734 (Kyoho 19), he performed in Nagoya with his dramatized version of a double suicide attempt that had taken place there, "Mutsumajikirenri no Tamatsubaki," which was well received. In the same year, he went to Edo, where he received the title of Bungo no Jō and took the name Tachibana no Morimura, and performed the above-mentioned kyogen, which was a big hit. In the following year, 1735, he performed at the Nakamura-za Theater, where his lustrous melody caused an explosive popularity, and his hairstyle, which was called Bunkin-style, and the tailoring and dressing of his long haori and clothes became fashionable. This caused him to be unpopular with the Edo Joruri people and their supporters, and he was eventually charged with disrupting public morals, which was taboo by the authorities at the time, with the magistrate issuing an order in 1603 (Genbun 1) stating that "the Miyakoji Joruri Tayu are not to be held together in the performance, and they cannot practice at home." He returned to Kyoto the following year and died there while working at a theater in Kamigata. His biological (or adopted) son, Wakadayu, succeeded him as the second generation, and it is said that Miyakoji Shidaidayu became Kunidayu and later took the name of the third generation.

浄瑠璃(じょうるり)の太夫(たゆう)で豊後節の始祖。京都の人。一中(いっちゅう)節の都太夫一中の門弟で都国太夫半中といい、のち独立して宮古路豊後を名のる。1734年（享保19）名古屋の興行では、その地で起こった心中未遂事件を脚色上演した『睦月連理(むつまじきれんりのたまつばき)』で好評を博した。同年江戸へ下り、豊後掾を受領(ずりょう)、橘盛村(たちばなのもりむら)を名のり、上記狂言を演じて大当りをとった。翌35年の中村座での上演ではつややかな曲節が爆発的な人気をよぶとともに、彼の文金風と名づけられた結髪や、長羽織や衣服の仕立て、着ぶりが流行した。そのため在来の江戸浄瑠璃系の連中やその支援者たちの反感を買い、ついには時の官憲の忌諱(きい)に触れて風俗壊乱の科(とが)で36年（元文1）に町奉行(ぶぎょう)から、「宮古路浄瑠璃太夫共芝居興行の儀は苦しからず、自宅にて稽古(けいこ)相成らず」との達しがあった。そこで、翌年京都へ帰り、上方(かみがた)の芝居に出勤して没した。実子（または養子）の若太夫が2世を継ぎ、宮古路世代太夫が国太夫を経てのちに3世を名のったとも伝えられる。
