1887‐1975 French poet. His real name was Alexis Saint-Léger Léger. Born in Ille-à-Fouilles in the French Antilles as the son of a plantation owner, he studied in Bordeaux, became acquainted with Claudel and became a diplomat. After serving in China for many years, he became Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but was dismissed for taking a hard-line stance against Germany during World War II and fled to the United States in 1940. He had already been highly praised for his debut work, Ode (1911), and Expedition (1924), which described his experiences in the interior of China, but he later devoted himself to public service, and after his exile he published works such as Exile (1942) and Rain (1944), which led to him being counted as one of the greatest poets of the 20th century.
