Egyptian sculpture is characterized by statues of gods with only animal heads, gods with cow's ears like the goddess Hathor, spirits with human heads and lion bodies like the Sphinx, and gods and spirits with whole animal bodies. Each god had a sacred animal, such as the hawk of Horus, the ram of Amun, the cow of Hathor, and the female cat of the goddess Bastet, which were depicted in sculpture, and this encouraged the development of animal sculpture. …
