[Wartime documentary]
Needless to say, before and after World War II, various countries used documentaries for political propaganda and to boost morale. In Germany, Nazi Minister of Propaganda Goebbels produced blatant propaganda films, such as Triumph of the Will (1935), a record of the Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg by Leni Riefenstahl, and Olympia (1938), a record of the Berlin Olympics, as well as war documentaries such as Baptism of Fire (1940) and Victory on the Western Front (1941), which showcased the power of the German army, to promote Nazism and its victory. Meanwhile, anti-Nazi propaganda films were also produced early on in the United States.

...Born in Berlin, she studied art and then studied as a ballerina under Max Reinhardt. She was recognized by director Arnold Fanck and starred in his mountain films (The Holy Mountain, 1925, The Silver Ridge, 1929, The Dance of the Silver Mountain, 1931, etc.). With the cooperation of Hungarian-born screenwriter and theorist Béla Balázs, she directed and starred in The Blue Light (1932), based on a mountain legend in the Dolomiti region of Italy. She was trusted by Hitler and made the documentary film Triumph of the Faith, held in Nuremberg in 1933, Triumph of the Will, held in 1934, and the Berlin Olympic film Olympia (a two-part series consisting of The Festival of the People and The Festival of Beauty, 1938), which marked a milestone in the history of documentary film. ...
