Paraffin paper

Japanese: パラフィン紙 - ぱらふぃんし（英語表記）paraffin paper

A processed paper made by coating or impregnating paper with wax. It is made by coating or impregnating a coating agent mainly made of paraffin on construction paper, glassine paper, or kraft paper, and has excellent water resistance. In Japan, research into its manufacture for use in packaging medicine began around 1900 (Meiji 33), and it became more popular around 1904 due to military demand. Since the invention of paper straws in 1919 (Taisho 8), production has expanded, and today it is widely used to package food, medicine, luxury items, machinery, and other items.

紙にろうを塗工したり含浸したりしてつくった加工紙。原紙として模造紙、グラシン紙またはクラフト紙などを用い、パラフィンを主とした塗布剤を塗るか含浸させて得られるので耐水性に優れている。日本では1900年（明治33）ごろから薬剤包装用としての製造研究が始められ、1904年ごろから軍の需要につれ盛んになり、1919年（大正8）のペーパーストローの考案以来製造が伸び、今日では食料品、医薬品、嗜好(しこう)品および機械類などの包装に広く用いられている。
