Chinguruma - Chinguruma

Japanese:
Chinguruma - Chinguruma

A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows in mat-like clusters, with the lower part of the stem branching and creeping along the ground, and the upper part growing upright or diagonally upward, reaching a height of about 10 cm. The leaves are pinnately compound with 7-11 leaflets, leathery and glossy. From June to August, a single white, five-petaled flower, 2-3 cm in diameter, blooms on a flower stalk about 10 cm long. There are many stamens and pistils. After flowering, the style elongates to 3 cm long and is covered with long, feathery hairs. The fruit is an achene. It grows in slightly humid areas in the high mountains of Honshu, north of the Chubu region, and Hokkaido, and is distributed in Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, and the Aleutian Islands. It is said that the name is a corrupted version of Chigoguruma (child's cart), which is derived from the adorable shape of the flower. It is a common alpine plant, and its autumn foliage is spectacular.

There are two or three species of the Aleutian genus that are distributed from the northern part of the Asian continent to the Aleutian Islands, and the appearance of the fruit resembles that of the Acanthus genus. There is also a theory that they are in the same genus as the Geum genus.
