The islands in the northern half of the West Indies and Lesser Antilles, from the Virgin Islands (UK/US) to Dominica, are mostly volcanic. They are the counterpart to the Windward Islands. The independent countries are Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, and Dominica, as well as Anguilla (UK), Montserrat (UK), and Guadeloupe (France). Although it is located in the tropics, it has a comfortable marine climate and is famous as a winter resort.
