A town in the Gard department in the south of France, facing the canal that connects the lower Rhône River with Sète on the Mediterranean coast. Population: about 7,000. It developed as a temple town for the monastery of the same name, and once attracted pilgrims from far and near. Little is known for certain about the monastery's founder, Saint Gilles (Aegidius). He is said to have been born in Greece in the 8th or 9th century. One day, he had a strong desire to leave his belongings behind, and set out on the Mediterranean in a small boat, where he was washed ashore here. He lived with deer in the mountains, performing ascetic practices, and performed many miracles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
