Training in the Ten Worlds

Japanese: 十界修行 - じっかいしゅぎょう

This refers to the ten types of training carried out on the mountain in Shugendo. It is explained that the ten stages of enlightenment described in the Avatamsaka Sutra - hell, hungry ghost, animal, asura, human, heaven, shravaka, pratyekabuddha, bodhisattva, and buddha - correspond to the ten stages of enlightenment described in the Avatamsaka Sutra: hell, hungry ghost, animal, asura, human, heaven, shravaka, pratyekabuddha, bodhisattva, and buddha - and that by completing these ten types of training during the period of entering the mountain, one can attain enlightenment in this very body. These are tokozume, a sitting method in which the practitioner realizes that his or her five bodies are the five elements of Mahavairocana Buddha, repentance, the scale of deeds that measures the weight of the sins the practitioner has committed, water cutting, aka, the manner of drawing water, sumo, ennen, kogi, which is the gathering of wood for goma, kokudachi, and seikanjo, which is the granting of the secret seal of the golden womb.

修験道で峰中で行われる10種の修行をいう。《華厳経》に説かれている成仏過程である地獄，餓鬼，畜生，修羅，人，天，声聞，縁覚，菩薩，仏の10の段階のそれぞれに，修行者の五体が大日如来の五大と悟る座法である床堅（とこづめ），懺悔，修行者の犯した罪の重さを計る業秤，水断，水汲みの作法である閼伽（あか），相撲，延年，護摩のための木をあつめる小木（こぎ），穀断（こくだち），金胎（こんたい）の秘印をさずける正灌頂の10種の修行を充当し，峰入りの期間中にこの10種の修行をおさめおわることによって即身成仏しうると説明された。
