[Died] March 16, 1898. Menton British illustrator. Almost entirely self-taught, he had a great influence on the Art Nouveau art of the time with his aesthetic pen-and-ink illustrations. His extremely delicate brushwork with sharp lines, which also show the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and Ukiyo-e, expressed a world of exotic fantasy and morbid sensation. After a short career of less than five years, he died of a chronic respiratory illness. His main works include illustrations for The Yellow Book and Savoy magazine, as well as illustrations for T. Malory's novel The Death of Arthur (1893) and O. Wilde's tragedy Salome (1994).

イギリスの挿絵画家。ほとんど独学で絵画を学び，ペン画による唯美的な挿絵を描いて当時のアール・ヌーボー美術に大きな影響を与えた。ラファエル前派や浮世絵の影響もみられる鋭い線のきわめて繊細な筆致で，エキゾチックな幻想と病的感覚の世界を表現。5年足らずの短い活躍ののち持病の呼吸器病で没した。主要作品は『イエロー・ブック』『サボイ』誌などの挿絵のほか T.マロリーの小説『アーサーの死』の挿絵 (1893) ，O.ワイルドの悲劇『サロメ』の挿絵 (94) 。
