Born: August 21, 1872, Brighton [Died] March 16, 1898. Menton British illustrator. Almost entirely self-taught, he had a great influence on the Art Nouveau art of the time with his aesthetic pen-and-ink illustrations. His extremely delicate brushwork with sharp lines, which also show the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites and Ukiyo-e, expressed a world of exotic fantasy and morbid sensation. After a short career of less than five years, he died of a chronic respiratory illness. His main works include illustrations for The Yellow Book and Savoy magazine, as well as illustrations for T. Malory's novel The Death of Arthur (1893) and O. Wilde's tragedy Salome (1994). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
