The term "New Art" refers to 14th-century French music. It can also include contemporary Italian music, but because of the significant stylistic differences, the Italian Ars Nova is often called "Trecento." Originally, "Ars Nova" was the title of a book on music theory by the composer and theorist Philippe de Vitry (c. 1320), which explained the highly complex polyphonic techniques of the "New Art" as opposed to the 13th-century French style of Ars Antica ("Old Art") by perfecting advanced musical notation.
