A pamphlet popular in 15th-century Western society, meaning "the art of dying" or "the art of going to the grave." The Black Death, a plague epidemic in the 14th century, caused people facing death to think only of how to die, and they sought guidance on how to die, leading to the popularity of pamphlets like this. The pamphlet described a drama of angels and demons battling around a person's deathbed for the soul that was trying to leave the body, and explained how to die as a Christian and how to behave at the moment of death.
