[History of classification society]
The oldest classification society in the world is Lloyd's Register of Shipping in the UK. It is said that in the 16th century, people involved in shipping gathered at Edward Lloyd's coffee shop in London to trade and exchange information, and a membership organization was formed, which eventually became an organization for insurance business. In the 19th century, classification societies were established in each country, and in the UK, another society, the British Corporation Register, was established in 1890, but was eventually merged into Lloyd's after World War II.
