Renal function test. The kidneys are responsible for excreting waste products and maintaining homeostasis by keeping the acid-base balance, osmotic pressure, and electrolyte concentration of bodily fluids at a constant level. When abnormalities occur in the kidneys and these functions are impaired, it becomes necessary to know which renal functions are impaired and to what extent. Renal function tests are performed in such cases. Specifically, they are performed when there are abnormalities in urine or urination, such as proteinuria or frequent urination, or when there are symptoms that are thought to be due to kidney disease, such as edema or high blood pressure.

腎臓の機能検査法。腎臓は老廃物の排出と，体液の酸塩基平衡や浸透圧，電解質濃度などを一定の状態に保つホメオスタシスの働きを担っている。腎臓に異常が生じて，これらの機能が損なわれたとき，腎臓のどの機能がどの程度障害されているのかを知る必要がでてくる。このようなとき行われるのが腎機能検査である。具体的には，タンパク尿や頻尿など尿や排尿に異常があるとき，浮腫や高血圧など腎臓疾患によると思われる症状があるときなどに行われる。
