A reading book from the late Edo period. Written by Takizawa Bakin. Illustrated by Katsushika Hokusai. 6 volumes, 7 books. Published in Bunka 5 (1808). Based on the famous love suicide between Minoya Sankatsu and Akaneya Hanshichi, which has been featured in matsuri-fuku and kabuki since early on, this novel incorporates elements of the Tang Dynasty's Nankoki. The story is set in the Eikyo era (1504-21) and in the household of Tsuzui Junsho, a feudal lord in Nara. Bakin changed the true story of Sankatsu Hanshichi's love suicide to end it with Sankatsu's birth mother Shikinami and Hanshichi's father Hanroku committing suicide in remorse to illustrate the idea of rewarding good and punishing evil, which he maintained as a philosophy in creating reading books.
