Japanese: サヤヌカグサ - さやぬかぐさ

A slender perennial grass of the Gramineae family (illustration) that is fairly common in lowland marshes and waterside areas. Its Japanese name, Sayanukagusa, comes from the fact that the spikelets resemble rice husks. The stem is slender, spreading horizontally at the bottom and branching while rising at the top, and can reach a height of 70 cm. The nodes are covered with inverted bristles. The leaves are broad and linear, about 10 cm long and just under 1 cm wide, somewhat soft, and form long sheaths at the base. Panicles appear at the ends of stems and branches from summer to autumn, but the base of the inflorescence is usually inside the leaf sheath and bears cleistratic flowers.

低地の湿地や水辺にやや普通にみられる細長いイネ科の多年草（イラスト）。その小穂の花穎（かえい）がイネのもみ殻つまり〈さやぬか〉に似ているからサヤヌカグサの和名がある。茎は細長く，下部は横にはって枝分れしながら上部は立ち上がり，高さは70cmに達する。節には逆向きの剛毛が生えている。葉は幅広い線形で，長さは10cm内外，幅は1cm弱で，やや軟質，基部は長い鞘（さや）になる。夏から秋にかけて茎や枝の先に円錐花序を出すが，ふつう花序の基部は葉鞘（ようしよう）内にあり，閉鎖花をつけている。
