Aurangabad (English spelling)

Japanese: アウランガーバード(英語表記)Aurangābād
Aurangabad (English spelling)
A city in the central part of Maharashtra, western India. It is the administrative capital of Aurangabad district. It is located about 280 km east-northeast of Mumbai (Bombay), at an altitude of about 560 m in the hills that continue south of the Ajanta range. It faces the Kaum River, a tributary of the Godavari River. When it was founded in 1610, it was called Khadki, but shortly after Aurangzeb, who later became the sixth Mughal emperor, took up the post as the governor of the Deccan and changed its name. It later came under the control of the Hyderabad Kingdom, and after independence it was incorporated into Bombay State, and has been part of Maharashtra since 1960. Silk is a specialty of the city, and it is also active in the processing of agricultural and livestock products from the surrounding area, as well as cotton and woolen textiles and oil extraction. The district is home to Buddhist ruins such as Ajanta and Ellora. Population: 572,634 (1991).
