Maximianus, Marcus Aurelius Valerius
[Raw] 240? Sirmium
[Died] 310. Massilia, Roman Emperor (reigned 286-305). Though of humble origins, he displayed military talent in military service and became a comrade-in-arms with Emperor Diocletian. In 285 he was made co-emperor, and the following year he became the legitimate emperor and ruled the west. He suppressed the Bakaudai rebellion. After the establishment of the tetrarchy (293), he ruled Italy, Hispania, Africa, and the Rhine. He was forced to abdicate along with Diocletian in 305, but when his son Maxentius rebelled against Rome in 306, he helped him return to politics and proclaimed himself legitimate emperor together with his son. He schemed to give his daughter Fausta to Constantine I (the Great), but later he fell out of favor with both Maxentius and Constantine, and after being defeated by Constantine at Massilia, he committed suicide.
