...But the PTT was unable to break away from its character as a regional political party in the south. The first president was François Tombalbaye, a member of the Sara people, the largest tribe in the south of the country, who established the PTT's one-party system in 1963. The Tombalbaye administration's xenophobic policies, which were centered on the south, not only provoked resentment from the northern residents, but also caused public discontent with its harsh exploitation of the people, authoritarian rule, and corruption among the bureaucrats, leading to a series of spontaneous rebellions from 1965 onwards.
