[Born] 1898.4.3. Shandong, Penglai [Died] February 28, 1967. Phoenix, Arizona. American publisher. One of the most influential figures in the history of American journalism. He built a publishing empire with the magazines Time, Fortune, and Life. Born into a Presbyterian missionary family, he spent his early years in China until he was 10 years old. He was sent to a British boarding school in northern China at the age of 10, then traveled alone to England, and then to the United States to study at Yale University. He edited the student newspaper at university, and graduated with outstanding grades in 1920. He founded Time with B. Haddon, whom he met at university. It attracted attention for its lively layout, highly individual writing style, and people-focused approach, mainly conceived by Haddon, and was profitable within four years of its launch. In 1930, he founded the business magazine Fortune. In 1936, the photo magazine Life was born, which quickly became one of the most popular magazines in history. Ruth served as editor-in-chief of all Time Inc. magazines from 1929 to 1964, and then became chairman. The magazines she published to educate the public spawned many similar titles. The weekly news magazine Time reported news in a story format. She focused on international news because she believed that this aspect was being ignored in American newspapers and magazines. The pages were divided into sections based on genre, and she adopted a style that made readers aware of the theme of the article. Ruth's magazines were also characterized by their active use of documents and materials to improve the quality of their articles, and by "group journalism," in which reporters and editors work together to create articles. Other magazines she published include House & Home, which was launched in 1952 (later sold to McGraw-Hill), and the sports weekly magazine Sports Illustrated, which was launched in 1954. In 1935, she married American screenwriter C. Boose. Both men were strong conservatives in politics and had a major influence in Republican and national politics. Ruth |
