Silkscreen - Shirukusukuriin (English spelling) silkscreen

A printing technique. It is also called serigraphy. It is a method of printing through a silk screen (sometimes made of nylon or tetron) stretched over a frame, and developed rapidly mainly in the United States after World War II. There are the following printing methods.

(1) A method in which a design is cut out of paper using a blade or other tool and then pasted to the back of a screen. In principle, this is an application of a stencil.

(2) Using a brush or stencil, a design is drawn on the back of the screen using water-soluble paste or emulsion, and then varnish is applied over it. After the varnish has dried, water is poured onto the screen, washing away the varnish and emulsion from the areas where the emulsion was applied, completing the printing plate.

(3) A photosensitive emulsion is applied to the screen and allowed to dry. A previously prepared film of the original is placed on top of the screen, exposed to light, and then washed with water to remove the unexposed emulsion. If a screen-treated film is used, subtle gradations of light and dark can be reproduced with precision.

In either case, a multi-colored work requires as many screens as there are colors.

The screen prepared in this way is placed on top of the paper, and the ink paste placed inside the frame is rubbed into the screen's grain with a urethane or rubber squeegee. The pattern is printed onto the paper through the exposed grain. It is often used in conjunction with woodblock printing and lithography. It is relatively easy to produce and can produce fairly large prints, making it one of the main printing methods today. In the United States, it was widely used from the late 1950s with the development of hard edge, op art, and kinetic art. It was also popular with pop art artists because it allows for machine-printed expressions.

版画技法の一つ。セリグラフィserigraphyともいう。枠に張った絹（ナイロンやテトロンを用いることもある）のスクリーン（幕）を介して印刷する方法で、第二次世界大戦後アメリカを中心に急速に発達した。製版の方法には次のようなものがある。

(1)刃物などで図柄を切り抜いた原紙をスクリーンの裏側に貼(は)り付ける方法で、原理的にはステンシルの応用といえる。

(2)筆あるいは型紙を用いてスクリーンの裏側に水溶性の糊(のり)や乳剤で図柄を描き、その上からニスを塗る。ニスが乾いてからスクリーンに水をかけると、乳剤を施した部分のニスが乳剤といっしょに洗い流されて版ができあがる。

(3)スクリーンに感光乳剤を塗り乾燥させる。これにあらかじめ用意した原稿のフィルムを当てて感光させて水洗いし、未感光の乳剤を除く。また網かけ処理をしたフィルムを用いれば、微妙な明暗のグラデーションも確実に再現できる。

　いずれの場合も多色刷りの作品には色の数だけスクリーンが必要である。

　このようにして用意したスクリーンを紙の上にのせ、枠の中に置いたペースト状のインキをウレタンやゴムのスクィージでしごくようにしてスクリーンの布目に擦り込む。布目があらわになった部分を通して、紙に図柄が刷り出される。木版やリトグラフと併用されることも多い。制作法が比較的容易であり、かなり大版の作品も制作が可能なため、今日の主要な版画法の一つとなっている。アメリカでは、1950年代後半ごろから、ハード・エッジ、オプ・アート、キネティック・アートなどの展開に伴って多用された。また、機械印刷的な表現も可能なので、ポップ・アートの芸術家たちも愛用した。
