Grey-headed woodpecker (yamagera)

Japanese: ヤマゲラ(山啄木鳥) - ヤマゲラ(英語表記)grey‐headed woodpecker
Grey-headed woodpecker (yamagera)
A bird of the woodpecker family, Picidae. A medium-sized woodpecker with a total length of about 30 cm and a greenish tinge overall. The upperparts are dark green, the black flight feathers have white spots, and the underparts are greenish-gray. It is very similar to the Japanese green woodpecker, but its jaw line is black and it does not have the black horizontal stripes on its abdomen. The male is bright red from the forehead to the top of the head, but the female is gray. It is distributed throughout Europe and Asia, living alone in pairs in deciduous broadleaf forests in mountainous areas, and migrating to plains in winter. Its habits and ecology are also very similar to those of the Japanese green woodpecker, drilling holes in dead trees and bark with its beak to pull out insect larvae to eat, and descending to the ground to hunt for ants.
