...Population: 53,683 (1995). The central settlement, Otawara, is located in a spring water zone at the end of the Nasu alluvial fan. At the end of the Middle Ages, it became the castle town of the Otawara clan and the development base of the surrounding alluvial fan area. During the Edo period, it became the castle town of the Otawara domain and came to occupy the position of a regional central city.
