A Russian theater. Its official name was the Gorky State Leningrad Red Army Order Academic Bolshoi Drama Theater (commonly known as the Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater), but it was renamed in 1991. It is commonly known by the abbreviation BDT. The theater building itself, which stands on the Fontanka Canal, which crosses almost the middle of Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg, was built in 1879 and was originally called the Apraksin Theater and then the Suborin Theater.
